Use of Hypnosis through the years and today…
Use of hypnosis or trance healing began as early as 1000 BC by ancient Egyptians in their “Sleep Temples”, where priests put people to “sleep” and suggested that they be cured…and they usually were. It was popularized in the nineteenth century by Franz Anton Mesmer and the term Mesmerism emerged. It’s continued acceptance and use has ebbed and flowed through the times based on those at the top of the food chain such the monarchy and the church, each greatly influencing whether it was in favour or fraud. Hypnosis was used by doctors in WWI and WWII in place of anesthetics on the battlefield. Sigmund Freud made use of hypnosis in his early career. In 1958 hypnosis was accepted as a field of study by the American Medical Association. For decades it has been used in medical, dental, childbirth and cancer centers to create greater comfort and relief from pain.
The founders and ground breakers of hypnosis as we know it can be attributed to the “Greats” like, James Braid, Al Krasner, Milton Erickson, Dave Elman, Ormand McGill, Scott McFall and so many more. The art of hypnosis has expanded and is braided together with other modalities and continues to entertain and educate us through stage hypnosis, coaching courses, training seminars, public speaking and neurolinguistic programming training (NLP), just to name a few. It’s uses are broad and varied in the modern world from helping athletes get the gold, to children with test anxiety or those who suffer with excess weight or are burdened with smoking. What Is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis can be defined in numerous ways, all of them are correct. Some definitions just speak more clearly to us than others. Some explanations for hypnosis include:

- Hypnosis is an altered state in which you bypass the critical faculty of your conscious mind and establish selective thinking in your subconscious mind.
- Hypnosis is the ability to focus on one thing, to the exclusion of everything else. Which really means you need to be able to pay attention, follow directions and have a desire to change.
- Hypnosis is a state of heightened awareness dominated by the subconscious mind. It involves guided concentration and elimination of other thoughts. During hypnosis, brain wave patterns slow down to an theta state indicative of hypnosis.
